October 5, 2019, 9am-6pm: When the weather turns cooler, then it’s time for the Rock Shrimp Festival in St Marys, located just minutes east of Kingsland. The festival is held the first Saturday in October and is hosted by the Kiwanis Club. Found in Georgia’s coastal waters, the rock shrimp looks almost like a tiny lobster and its taste is somewhere between shrimp and lobster. This festival honoring this coastal delicacy includes 5K/10K races, parade, and entertainment throughout the day, food concessions, arts & craft booths and rock shrimp dinners. Coastal Obituaries

Daniel Webster Simpson Jr. was born Sept. 28, 1943, in Bessemer, Ala., to the late D.W. Simpson and Clara Fisher Jones. He passed away in Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday, July 28, 2019, after 12 years of an extended illness.
Daniel and Edith moved to Camden County in 1968. They joined the First African Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and chairman of the building committee.
He was an educator for 37 years, serving three years in the Dallas County School System (Alabama) and 34 years in the Camden County school system. He served eight years on the Camden County Board of Education.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, D.W. and Clara Simpson; brothers, Calvin Simpson, Edward Simpson, Rev. Willie James Jones and Jimmie Jones; sisters Mary Rose Poole, Rose Mary Scott, Patricia Bell, Sarah Cooks and Josephine Cole.
Survivors include a loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Edith of Kingsland; two children, Daniel (Kimberly) Simpson III of Kingsland and Sheryl (Drexel) Cook of Powder Springs; five grandchildren, Daniel W. Simpson IV, Olivia E. Simpson, Kyla D. Cook, Kailey D. Cook and Drexel D. Cook Jr.; sisters, Louvenia Jones and Clotelia Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

LCDR Ronald William Eickhoff, (U S Navy, Ret.), 61, of Kingsland, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. Ron was born March 2, 1958, in Highland Park, MI. He served with the United States Army from 1976 until 1980, joining the United States Navy in 1981. He was a Gulf War veteran and was commissioned in 1990 as an Ensign. Ron retired from the US Navy in 2006, after 30 years of Military service.
Ron is survived by his wife of 39 years, Julia Eickhoff, and their Son, HM2 Daniel Eickhoff, and Daughters, Miranda Lewis and Savannah Fletcher, grandchildren; Landon Eickhoff, Owen, Oliver, and Harlow Lewis, and Dominic Fletcher.
Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019, 10:00 a.m., at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, FL. Allison Memorial Chapel of St. Marys, is in charge of the arrangements

George Keck Powell, M.D., AAFP, FACS (ret.), colonel U.S. Army (ret.), 80, of St. Marys passed away Aug. 20, 2019.
He served 26 years in the U.S. Army as a trauma surgeon in Vietnam, also at Fort McPherson in Georgia, Fort Knox in Kentucky, Fort Bliss in Texas, Fort Gordon in Georgia and with NASA on ocean recoveries for Apollo and Skylab missions.
He held associate clinical professor positions at four different medical schools, became program director for surgical residency programs in El Paso, Texas, and Augusta and finally served as surgical consultant to the surgeon general of the U.S. Army.
He graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1964, Colorado College in 1960 and Aurora High School Denver in 1956.
Survived by his wife, Alice Jane Powell, of 44 years; four children, Katharine Ziegler, Robert Powell, Rebecca Powell and Benjamin Powell; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a chosen sister and brother, Marsha and Larry Sherman.
He was an avid fisherman, golfer, musician, world traveler and loved life, family and friends.

Jason Edward, Kincheloe, 34, of Kingsland, passed away August 28, 2019 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 30, 2019 at Allison Memorial Chapel with Pastor Bobby Woods officiating.  A visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home, one hour prior to service time. Survivors include his parents, Larry and Debi Kincheloe, a sister, Lashae Kincheloe – Ward, and her husband Charles, and uncle, Danny Sikes, his grandfather, Daniel Sikes, a niece and 2 nephews. Jason was born April 3, 1985, in Jacksonville, FL, to Lawrence Jackson and Debra Sikes Kincheloe, and was employed at Denny’s of Kingsland.

Robert Carl Nurmi, 69, of Woodbine, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at the Harbour Worship Center, with Military Honors.  Sean Billington, Eddie Hardman, Craig Smith, Steve McKinney, Rob Mastroini, Jim Proctor, Kevin Chaney, Tom Whitesell, Danny Sikes, and Jay Thomas will serve as active pallbearers. Pastor Mike Sanes and Associate Pastor Ken Smith will officiate. A private family interment will be held at the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Glennville, GA.
Mr. Nurmi was born Sept. 30, 1949 in Chicago, IL, to Arne W. and Theodora Hopewell Nurmi. He was a graduate of Thornridge High School in Dalton, IL, and attended Eastern Illinois University. He retired from the United States Navy as a Master Chief after 20 years of service, serving during Vietnam. He had been a resident of Camden County since 1983, where he was employed as an instructor with Trident Training Facility, Kings Bay, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he worked with the Kingsland Police Department, Camden County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Fire & Rescue, Kingsland Fire Rescue and Charlton County EMS. He was a member of the Harbor Worship Center and especially enjoyed doing for others.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela Givens Nurmi of Woodbine, children, Christopher Lee Nurmi (Lori) of Camilla, GA, Catherine Nurmi of Atlanta, Pamela Michelle Hooks (Brian) of Grovetown, GA, grandchildren, Olivia and Bella Nurmi, Carter, Grant, and Grace Hooks, brothers, William John Nurmi (Doris) of Beecher, IL, and Leonard Nurmi (Ann) of Darnestown, MD. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Ann Sorrick.

Sergeant Derek Joseph Diesel, a loving husband, son and father passed away unexpectedly at the age of 25 in St. Marys, GA on August 28, 2019. Derek was born on July 15th 1994 in Manhassett, New York to Keith and Marion Diesel. He attended VMI and pledged his service to the Marine Corps in 2014. He was dedicated to the Marine Corps and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was married to Kara Diesel and had a 2 year old daughter, Emilia Diesel.
Derek was a hardworking, passionate leader both at home and throughout his service in the Marine Corps. He loved his family, friends, and country. His hobbies included spending time with his wife and daughter, working on their house, cars and motorcycles. He was also a member of Rival MC and enjoyed riding with his brothers in the club.
Derek is survived by his wife Kara, daughter Emilia, his mother and father-in-law Pam and Kenny, his mother and father Marion and Keith, his brother Louis, and two sisters Victoria and Alexandra.

Odis Frank Harter, Jr., also known as “Howard” and “Junior”, 78, of Waverly, Georgia passed away on August 31, 2019 at his residence.
Odis was born on November 30, 1940 in Jesup, Georgia, the son of the late Odis Frank Harter and Martha Eugenia Anderson Harter. He is also predeceased by a brother, James Tillman Harter and sister, Wanda Jean Akin.
Odis graduated from high school in Ludowici, Georgia. He joined the Marines right after high school and then served in Marine Reserves. After leaving the Marines he worked for B&W in Brunswick, Georgia as a welder. He then moved to Orlando, Florida and began his career as a construction worker until his retirement. Odis was involved in renovating the Harold Pate Courthouse Annex in 1996. Odis enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his hunting buddies down at the hunting club.
Survived by his son, SMSgt Howard F. Harter (Vicki) of Waverly, Georgia and daughter, Gina L. Harter of Hortense, Georgia; his grandchildren, Jeremiah Harter, Devon Miller, Ashley Nolan (Brian), Drake Harter and Logan Harter; his great grandchildren, Demitri Harter, Guinevere Harter and Carter Nolan; a brother, Mickey Harter (Phyllis) and sister, Janice Parson (Doug).
A Memorial Service was held Saturday, September 7, 2019, at the Waverly United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Goode, officiating.
